Do you really need to hire an Interior Design Professional?

Updated: Apr 4

Hiring an "Interior Designer" has a stigma...

I get it.. It's something many people would see as completely unnecessary, and costly!

All the information and "How To" guides are right at our finger tips... surely it cant be that hard?

I am always surprised to learn how the skills involved with design do not come easy to everyone. It is in fact a talent to balance shape, colour and functionality within a space. I can appreciate that a harmonious interior is not important to everyone, but I think something we all want- is to feel comfortable in our homes. The power of design can certainly give us that!

A designer/ decorator will help harmonise your home. If you are renovating or making major changes- It could be preferable to have a designer on board.

Will they save you money? Maybe.

Perhaps they stop you from making poor purchasing decisions? Or maybe they get you addicted to bed linen- in which case you wont save anything....

But what they will likely do- is make your home something you can be proud of.

Many years ago when I was 18, had just left school & I wanted to be an interior designer. I started studying at a Design School in Sydney but I found it very expensive.

Back then there wasn't many interior designers- It was definitely a profession for the more wealthy... I could barely afford to study it!

I'm a practical person- I knew it would be hard to get a job, so I just found myself working my way up the ladder from the part-time retail job I held at the time.

It wasn't until 15 years later that I finally took the plunge to start my own business offering organisation and styling- I wanted to service the GAP in the "interior design" market. And to me- that gap is EVERYDAY PEOPLE (with kids!!) that want to have a nice looking home they are proud of, yet they simply don't know where to start.

There are many different types of interior designers now, operating at very different levels. It no longer has to be a huge commitment where you hand over your home and let some stranger buy your furniture for you (unless that's what you want- because if it is- then yep.. you can do that too!) On the flip side- now the client can maintain the control of how much they spend and what they spend it on! E-design is becoming increasingly popular- where concept boards are put together for you to take the stress out of planning an interior.

I love that the people I have worked with over the years haven't known anything about interior design- yet they have gone on the journey with me in transforming their space with only the smallest of additions.

If you desire more out of your space- Hiring an interior design professional of some kind is absolutely worth it if you do not have the time, or skills to pull it off on your own!
